Basic Treatment For Main Task -

Working Title -
  • Dear Diary

Genre -

  • Thriller

Central Themes -

  • Kidnapping, stalking and murder

Synopsis -

  • Lucy is a smart A-level student who aspires to be a writer and documents her life daily, her life gets turned around after she is met with her stalker who has been planning to kidnap her for months. The truth of the mysterious disappearance of her friends are soon revealed through their dead bodies at the kidnappers house. Her only sanity is the continuation of her diary entries which keep her hope alive and potentially save her life.

Pitch -

  • Our film will be different than other crime thrillers as the audience will see the movie from the perspective of the person who is kidnapped. You will see all the hardships and traumatic experiences she has to endure to create a hard hitting, emotional and at times scary film.
  • Our target audience will be teenagers, the film will be certified a 15 due to the more explicit content and the violent themes.

Characters -

  • Lucy = A 17 year old school girl who is focused on her studies and building a secure future for herself. She will be played by someone who studies A Level drama and has confidence to act to a camera.
  • Frank = A 39 year old he is smart however, very psychologically unwell due to his upbringing. For the movie opening he is hardly going to be in it and you won’t see his face so any boy can play this role.

Film Opening Sequence -

  • The opening sequence which we will be focusing on will start with a flashback to before Lucy is kidnapped and shows Frank’s room filled with photos of her at school, out with friends, at her house etc this will be voiceoverd by one of her diary entries.
  • It will then switch to modern day where Lucy will be on a run, she will take a shortcut through the forest and start to hear twigs snapping and bushes rustling.
  • In shock she will drop her phone and as she stands up and turns around a man in a black coat will be standing in front of her, the screen will go black and the title will be shown.

Film Techniques -

  • The opening will be filmed from the audiences perspective but then will switch to Frank’s view when the tension changes.
  • We will use dark colour pallet and low key lighting to create a more sinister feeling. Also we will use cut transitions to reflect the fast pace of the film and long shots to show who’s perspective we are watching it from.

Production Considerations -

  • We need a big field area that’s surrounded by a forest of some description, the field opposite The Thicket is somewhere we have considered filming.
  • It would need to be a big space but also a forest, somewhere that is dark always creates a more tense atmosphere.

Timeline -

  • 00:00-00:05 = The screen is black, nothing is shown to us as an audience in the first frame. Music fades in quickly and starts as almost an elongated echoed fog horn sound which increases in volume and dominates the shot. It is very deep and low in pitch which infers a dark more sinister feeling for the offset.
  • 00:05-00:10 = The music and blank screen continue onto this frame, a couple of seconds into this shot an additional layer of music starts, sounds similar to a heartbeat almost creating and building the tension. Elongating the black screen also has a similar affect of drawing it out and making viewers tense and on edge.
  • 00:10-00:15 = The heartbeat sounds increases in volume and speed and overtakes the over music slightly, the screen is still remaining black dragging out the tension even more thus making it very dramatic. On the last second of this section a drum beat starts potentially signifying a change in what we are seeing.
  • 00:15-00:20 = The drum music turns into that of a more rock vibe with the speed increasing and intensifying. The distribution companies are shown written in capital letters centre of the screen towards the bottom. The screen behind it is still black and the writing is a font similar to time new roman in white. An image flashes very suddenly on the screen behind the text until the text disappears and the image of what appears to be an eye flashes. It's a green colour and takes up the majority of the screen. Another image flashes on the screen rapidly in the similar green colour and the production company/producer is names in the same font in it was prior to this but it isn't central.
  • 00:20-00:25 = The music intensifies and turns to that of a fast pace rock style and on the screen flashes a dark green image of scales and a drop of water running down it. This rapidly changes to moving image of water which is only lit in the center of the screen as the rest is black. The directors name appears at the bottom center of the screen in capital letters in a white font to contrast the darker images. The name continues onto the next image which is quite unclear as to what it is but the dark colour haven't changed. The music continues and when then see something hitting the water but it has been slowed down but is only shown for a brief moment. Finally in this section we are shown what appears to be a wall and we see an actors name appear in the same font and colour as was the directors but is bottom left this time around.
  • 00:25-00:30 = The actors name overlaps onto this section and the music intensifies and increases in speed. The image it is imposed over is of what appears to be oil trickling down some sort of rough surface. This is quickly followed by what again appears to be oil rushing up the screen and then we see a tyre and another actors name in white to the top right-hand side of the screen. This changes quickly to a different image which isn't that clear to deceiver but sticks with the dark colour pallet and low key lighting. An image of a grey dragon is shown imposed on a black background which is the first time in the opening the title has been made relevant.
  • 00:30-00:35 = The image of the dragon overlaps slightly onto this section, in a quick cut transition the title appears on the screen, just of center in a metallic grey colour. The font is capitalized and certain letters have slashes and indents in them. The black liquid substance the covers the screen until the title is no longer on display. Next what appears to be a person covered in this liquid is tied up and laid horizontally across the screen, they are struggling to escape. This is shown for a maximum of two seconds before it cuts to a keyboard also horizontally placed on the screen and the liquid starts to run down it.
  • 00:35-00:40 = The shot of the keyboard and the black liquid overlaps into this time for the first second, the music getting louder and becoming more detailed. It then quickly cuts to shot of head with a piece of cloth covering the mouth and a locked chain around the neck. Again like all things shown it is covered in the black liquid and is also fighting hard to try and escape the chains and ties. Next, it cuts to the keyboard again but the camera is zoomed in on a different section as the black liquid run in-between the keys. Additionally the next shot is of another section of the computer keys with the liquid running through it and an actors name appears in the same white capitalized font on the top left section of the screen. The black liquid then appears to be going down a drain of some description and the name is still in the top corner, the music intensifies with more bass guitar elements being added. The name then disappears of the screen and the music changes to signing coming from a man in a rock, upbeat sort of tone. This section ends with a shot of the liquid coming out of a sewage system filmed from a close up angle.
  • 00:40-00:45 = The black liquid emerging from drains and sewage networks like many time frames overlaps onto this section I am analysing. This last for 2-3 seconds of this segment and the it cuts to an image of lips with the liquid pouring of out, the signing has grown more intense and the lyrics are rather difficult to make out. Superimposed, over this in white capital letters in the same font as previous names is 'Steven Berkoff' in the top left corner. The name remains there when the next clip is shown, the rest of the screen is blacked out and in the center you see a rotating grey coloured tyre with pouring of it. The clip ends with a canted angle shot of a section of what appears to be a female face again in the same black/grey colour scheme with the black liquid running down from the top of the face.
  • 00:45-00:50 = The clip of the zoomed in shot of the face overlaps onto this shot for the first second, the name which was on the top left hand corner has now gone. What appears to be a container of some description is taking up the majority of the screen and has the black liquid (oil) overflowing and pouring of out the screwed on cap. A name is written on the bottom left hand side of the screen, again in the same white capitalized font as before. The name stays when the next shot is cut to, it shows an air vent with the liquid pouring down from the top. It quickly cuts to a shot of someone's face covered in the liquid as it runs down the face, the name is now gone, the face also rotates for a second as if it was doing a 180 degree turn but it cuts to the next shot half way through. The next shot is difficult to deceiver but it appears to be a leaver of some description again like all objects shown it is covered in the liquid, a name is written on the left hand side of the screen about half way down however it edges slightly to the center of the screen. It is in the same capital, white font as all previous texts shown.
  • 00:50-00:55 = The black liquid with an actors name imposed on the left hand side of the screen overlaps onto this section of the opening. It then cuts to a rotating image of a cluster of the black liquid just of center of the screen, the name is now gone and the rest of the screen is completely black. It quickly changes to a shot of a wooden baton with a fire burning on the end, this lightens up the screen and the background has patches of smoke. The music continues, the same song that has been playing throughout however now more lyrical. Next, it cuts to a black screen with a hatch covered in black liquid on the right-hand side and on the left is a name written in the same font as previous pieces of text. Finally, the name stay imposed on the screen and iPhone charger cables enter from the right hand side of the screen until they are about half way across the screen it cuts to another object covered in black liquid and that is were this segment ended.

The movie opening continues showing similar shots as I have thoroughly analysed in the first minute. The speed intensifies throughout with the action on the screen becoming more gripping and engaging. The incorporation of fire adds something more sinister to the opening and relevant to the title. The illustration of characters and objects still covered in the black liquid suggests it has some relevance to the storyline in someway. The music grows louder throughout and the signing becomes more aggressive again supporting the idea that this movie is a thriller. The transitions simply consist of cuts and the pace is extremely fast and upbeat hinting at a dramatic and intense movie. Extreme close up shots are used throughout to keep a sense of mystery surrounding certain characters and ideas.

Analysis:

  • The shot starts with a plain black screen which prior to this lasted for about 15 seconds, this infers a sinister nature with suspense building up throughout keeping the watcher interested and wanting to know what is happening next. The music which you cannot here always builds up and becomes louder hinting at something climatic happening which keep the watcher engaged. The simplicity of the text doesn't take away from the affect the movie opening is having on the audience, however still on some letters has some extended lines and things that accentuate it to make it more obsecure. The flashing image is rather alarming and jumps in straight away, the dark green/grey colours infer a negative atmosphere from the offset.

  • This shot introduces the title in a metallic grey colour, it is positioned slightly of center and has slashes in certain letters. This communicates the overall impression of the movie, the colours and font hint at a negative atmosphere due to the darker colour and undertone. They connote ideas that are common to the horror/thriller genre and compliment the tone of this movie opening.

The film got the official greenlight from Warners in early 2005, and began shooting in the spring of 2005.Although some of the film was shot on location in Boston, for budgetary and logistical reasons many scenes, interiors in particular, were shot in locations and sets in New York City, which had tax incentives for filmmakers that Boston at the time did not.

Timeline -

  • 00:00-00:05 = The opening shot starts on a grey/black screen and establishes the location by stating it in white text that is central. It also tells the audience when the next clip was taken by saying 'some years ago'. This shot stays on the screen for 3 seconds before immediately by using a straight cut goes into the next shot. It shows 2 men fighting, it uses a dark colour pallet and low key lighting but as well as this it is easy to infer the footage is from a different time as the quality isn't the best as it is blurred and speech is muffled. It is filmed from a long distance and initially establishes a negative tone.
  • 00:05-00:10 = The fight continues onto the next time frame and more people join in, some trying to stop the fight and others contribute to it. At 00:07 a voiceover takes over the situation, but as appose to narrating what is happening he talks about himself. This then takes the focus off what is happening in the frame as we as an audience are more focused on listening to what he is saying. During this time the camera angle stays the same however it zooms in to get closer into the action that is happening on screen.
  • 00:10-00:15 = The voiceover continues and he is speaking in a clear voice with a slow pace to ensure those watching understand him. The clip transitions onto a medium close up of a police man standing in front of an older fashioned yellow school bus. The shot continues following the bus as it drives along the road and we see another police man also from the same distance. However the angle is more tilted with it being taken from the side of the road instead of directly in front.
  • 00:15-00:20 = The voiceover is present throughout the rest of the opening sequence, this frame shows more fights happening in the streets which could reflect the brutality and then anger of the time. Also, someone runs across with an American flag on fire which could show a hatred and revolt towards America or the government. An extreme close up shot follows this point which zooms in on 'NO' written in white capital letters on a black post box. The final second of this frame focuses on a school bus with children waving looking happy and content.
  • 00:20-00:25 = This frame starts with a shot of two girls in a school bus smiling and waving, clearly acknowledging the cameras presence, a close up shot of a smashed school bus follows this and we see the eye of a child. The camera zooms out showing a line of buses being guarded by police officers.
  • 00:25-00:30 = This starts with a medium long shot of a crowd of people, the camera pans around to show the magnitude and scale of the people present. The voiceover has stopped at this point at the sound from the footage being shown is now being heard by watchers. A sound bridge of a man speaking from the footage starts at roughly 00:27 and at 00:30 we see who he is and a close up of his face from an angle.
  • 00:30-00:35 = A soft acoustic music starts at the beginning of this frame, whilst the man is still talking. The atmosphere and tone has changed to that of a happier more lighter nature. We then see an establishing shot of an American city, most probably Boston due to the information giving to us at the start of the opening sequence. The music continues playing over this shot also. The camera then pans and starts to focus on a certain area of the city meanwhile the voiceover starts again and the music fades into the background but still plays.
  • 00:35-00:40 = The music is very quiet now but still being heard faintly while the voiceover continues. The camera zooms in closer onto a certain area of the establishing shot of Boston. The zoom grows more intense and deeper over this time frame.
  • 00:40-00:45 = The camera focuses on that one section for a couple of seconds and cuts straight to a shot of a man walking in what appears to be a garage. His figured is blacked out as first as he is standing behind a door. This could potentially indicate a change in time period due to the swift and sudden changes in footage that is being shown. The music becomes louder and now is also accompanied with an electric guitar also. The voiceover also continues, we could speculate that the man we now see in the clip is doing the voiceover but that isn't told to us.
  • 00:45-00:50 = The music continues and the voiceover becomes more lighthearted and humorous. Swearing, and informal language is used to show a change in tone, the camera follows the man walking along a garage. He is smoking a cigarette and wearing sunglasses with slicked back hair.
  • 00:50-00:55 =  In this frame the man is still walking, no cuts or edits have been used due to it being a continuation of the last section. We see him breath out his smoke, the camera is still following him as he walks. As well as this the camera is following him from the side angle and is filming from a medium close up distance. In addition derogatory language is being used by the voiceover, potentially to create a clearer more vivid picture of the harsh realities of that time.
  • 00:55-01:00 = The camera continues still to follow the man but also as the clip progresses the camera slowly zooms in onto his face which is still blacked out so we only see the high points and outlines. The voiceover is still a continuing presence and with the music is the only sound being heard by watchers. Ambient sound from what we are actually being shown isn't being heard at all.
  • 01:00-01:05 = The camera zooms in slightly more on the figure but he continues walking. The camera at this point stops tracking the figure which allows him to walk out of shot. Also, the music grows louder and eventually after 2 second takes over and the voiceover stops completely. This followed by a clear cut shows a change in location potentially but definitely shows a change in situation. The final second starts with an establishing shot of a shop which a car drives past, we still don't hear sound from the content being shown at this point.
  • 01:05-01:10 = The camera zooms into the shops door but instead of staying in one place it physically moves. Almost as if it is representing a person walking up to the shop, a lady walks by with a dog and we see a man sitting on a green bench reading a newspaper.
  • 01:10-01:15 = The camera draws in closer to the shop and we see two young boys walking out of the store carrying a brown paper bag and what appears to be a comic book. The instrumental music turns into signing also and the camera turns to show a bar area with young children sat drinking coke and reading comics.
  • 01:15-01:20 = The camera turns roughly 90 degrees until it's directly facing the bar, during this turn the man behind the bar walks across to wear the camera is positioned. This makes it clear to the audience that the camera is in fact representing a person.
  • 01:20-01:25 = The music is still playing but we now can hear sound from the actual video we are seeing. We hear a car slamming its breaks and the tyres screeching on the road, at this moment we see an older man at the bar wearing a blue shirt. The till opens and there is a close up shot of the cashier handing money over to the man and him seeing how much there is. It is possible this man is the same person who we saw in a previous section at the garage.

Analysis:

  • The clip starts with a black screen that has grey undertones, superimposed on it in capital, bold writing is Boston and underneath in the same font but not capitalized it establishes a rough time period. Then it uses a straight cut to transition to a blurred clip of two men fighting. The use of dark colours establish a dark and negative setting which is fitting considering it moves into a violent fight. Furthermore, it uses a medium long shot to give detail to what is happening so we as an audience see what is going on in that particular frame.

  • The camera pans around showing a driving school bus which is behind several stationary buses. We also see two police officers wearing protective armour standing affirmatively on the side of the road. Their authoritarian posture and stance could show their power but also their seriousness, the buses could be being used to transport children from a dangerous environment. The police being present issues a sense of alert and fear which increase the tension of the shot.

  • The fighting continues once again and is similar to what was shown in the first segment of the opening. However this time to fighting is on a larger scale and is more brutal. Additionally we see someone run across the background holding an American flag that is on fire. This could shown signs of rebellion and anger towards the country or government. The dark lighting could be symbolizing the open brutality and violence being show to us, but also reiterating the negative mood and tone of the opening sequence.

  • The starts zoomed onto a broken piece of glass window on a school bus were we see a girls eye looking outside. The camera draws back swiftly showing the line of school buses and back of a police officers head. The cracked glass could represent a broken country or society, the fights, protests, anarchy all point towards a rebellion. The broken glass could symbolize and broken nation.

  • The establishing shot of what we presume to be Boston sets the scene for the rest of the scene. This could also acts as an indication of a change in time, normally we would see this shot at the beginning of a movie opening but this particular movie has gone against movie conventions. The camera then slightly pans around a zooms into a certain place, therefore draws our attention onto a different spot of the frame.

  • This gif uses low key lighting to keep an element of suspense and unknown, we don't know who the man is but it allows the audience to guess and speculate which makes viewing more engaging. He is walking in a slow and relaxed manner but also is tall and looking slightly up towards the sky. This could show power and authority which makes watchers aware of his status and character.

  • This shot shows a change in location, the dark colours and dusty setting could show a more poor and lower class area. The darker colours could also have negative connotations of danger, as appose to lighter colours which could represent safety and purity.

  • Here we see two male characters, both wearing blue which is stereotypically a boy's colour so it shows there masculinity. However, the man with his back to the camera has a higher status due to he is getting money and his watch and sunglasses. The apron shows a lower status, and a more middle class to lower class citizen as appose to the other man in the frame.

Costume and Make Up:
  • The costumes are representative of the time period and location of the footage, darker colours are used to represent not only masculinity but a more lower class area of living. It was set in 2006 so the use of older less fashionable clothing reflects the time period well.

Genre Analysis (Thriller) - BFI Statistical Yearbook

BFI Statistical Yearbook - Genre Information:
  • To allow myself to gather quantitative data on the Thriller genre, my partner and I have made close reference to the BFI's 2015 Statistical Yearbook due to it's reliability and broad selection of information. In the BFI’s own words. 'The Statistical Yearbook presents in one place all the available statistics on UK film and the UK film industry.’
Analysis
  • The Thriller genre grossed £37.1 million being a genre that sits in the middle of this chart and in total is 2.9% of all box office sales.
  • 52 Thriller movies were made making it more popular that genre's such as horror, romance and fantasy. This number amounts to 6.9% of all releases in the UK.
  • The top performing Thriller of 2015 was Taken 3.
  • 2 of the ten highest grossing 18 movies were Thriller movies and when looking through all the classification bands Thriller movies were only listed in the 18 section.
Significance
The Thriller genre wasn't the most popular type of movies among the British public in 2015 however it still grossed a lot of money. Most thriller movies had 15 and 18 certificate however the most popular Thriller movie Taken 3 was a 12A. This shows us that we should be aiming our movies to an audience of at least 15 year old minimum due to more violent and explicit content of them movie. 40% of the viewers who watched Taken 3 were 15-24 which shows us that our movie opening would appeal more to older teenagers and young adults. There was no information on whether men or women would prefer Thriller movies but due to the violent and graphic nature which stereotypically appeals to the male gender I would assume that men would be more likely to watch our movie opening.

The Registrar General's Social Scale
The Registrar General’s Social Scale is the way the British Government defines the populace through their occupation:

A benefit of the Registrar General’s Social Scale is that it can help companies to target audiences. However, the scale has been criticised for being both crude and rigid.

BFI Statistical Yearbook: Films with Above Average Shares of Audience Members from Specific Groups of the Registrar General's Social Scale:

Significance
What we intend on creating (Thriller movie opening) is most relevant in the DE group having up to 29% of it's watchers from this bracket. Meaning our production should be most appealing for those classes while also still appealing to other people as well.

Main Task Overview -

For our main task we have to create the opening sequence to a film, including titles. Our production must last no longer than 2 minutes.

Our work will be marked out of 100 which will be divided into three categories.

Research and Planning - 20 Marks

For any film to be successful it requires research and planning so that the film can be shot, edited and released by the deadline.

When researching and planning for our film some of the tasks we will carry out include:
  • Audience Research
  • Film Deconstructions
  • Initial Ideas
  • Film Treatment
  • Location Research
  • Casting Research
  • Costume Research and List
  • Props Research and List
  • Storyboard
  • Shot list
  • Risk Assessment
  • Filming Plan
Construction of Film Titles and Opening - 60 Marks

During this stage we will film our shots and write a reflection on what went well and how we could have improved.

We will then begin to edit our shots together to create the final production. We will get feedback from our focus group to see how we could improve and apply them to our editing.

Evaluation - 20 Marks

Finally, we will evaluate our final production and reflect on the process identifying the positives but also the negatives and the problems we encountered and how we overcame them.

Preliminary Task Review

Preliminary Task Review -

We decided to film our preliminary task about a girl called Kayleigh who goes for a job interview as a teacher but the criminal record she thought was in her past comes back to haunt her and as a result is denied the job she always wanted.

What went well? -
  • We were able to use different techniques such as 180 degree shot, over the shoulder shot, close up and tracking shot.
  • Also, we showed we could use Adobe Premier by using basic cut transitions and adding text. This is something we hope to develop for our main task.
  • We worked well as a pair and split the work up well so we both played an equal role in the creating and development of this task.
  • Finally, we were able to learn the basics about both how to use and work the camera and the fundamental techniques you need to use Adobe Premier Pro.
What we could have done better? -
  • Firstly, our time keeping, due to the misplacement of the SD card we filmed on and then having to re film we now have learnt to use our own memory cards and save all our media files to the computer right after filming to ensure nothing goes missing.
  • Next, a more detailed and descriptive storyboard would have allowed us to have a cleared idea of the precise camera shots and positioning of the actors participating at all times. This would have allowed us to have a more concise and well structured end product.
  • Finally, our editing process, I believe we could have been more experimental with the transitions and effects we used. This would have allowed us to gain more skills and confidence using the software. However, after spending more time on Adobe after editing our preliminary task and watching many tutorials is safe to say that we have definitely learnt new skills that we will apply to our main task.
What We Will Do Differently Next Time? -
  • First we will be more careful in the uploading and storage of our original footage to ensure it doesn't go missing like with our original preliminary task.
  • Second, we will divide the work fairly between ourselves from the offset so we both have a clear idea and understanding of exactly what we will be doing throughout the process's of pre-production, production and post-production.
  • Last, we will keep a more detailed record and log of all thoughts and ideas we have relating to our filming and the task in general to ensure our blogs are as informative as possible.
Overall -
  • Our preliminary task demonstrated our basic knowledge and understanding of the functions and uses of Adobe Premier Pro and the way in which you work the camera and the equipment that comes along with it. I feel we learnt many valuable lessons from this task both positively and negatively which overall will benefit our future projects due to the extensive knowledge and skills we now have.
  • Additionally, we also learnt the importance of planning a precise and intricate story board and shot list that would make the running of out filming more smooth. As a pair we now know that planning, filming and editing all require the same amount of effort and none should be understated or brushed over.
In conclusion I feel me and my partner worked we all as team distributing tasks evenly and both using our skills to benefit and aid the task brief. I believe I contributed as an director, producer and editor. During the planning process I wrote the screen play, did the shot and prop list and helped with the planning of the storyboard. When filming my partner and I took it in turns each filming little sections to get a feel for using the camera. Finally, editing I contributed by importing the footage and cutting the clips down in order to piece them together.
